At Four Paws, we use the vaccination protocol
recommended by Texas A&M University for pets residing in Texas.
T.A.M.U. Vaccine Protocol
Here is the present protocol.
T.A.M.U.-VMTH Small Animal Vaccination Protocols 2002
CATS:
CORE VACCINES:
Feline parvovirus (panleukopenia)
Feline herpesvirus 1
Feline calicivirus
Rabies (We are using Merial PureVax)
Core vaccines are given as a pediatric series to kittens >
6 weeks of
age. Ages of vaccination are 6-9-12-16 weeks if vaccination
is started
at 6 weeks, 8-12-16 weeks if vaccination is started at 8 weeks.
Rabies vaccine is given only once at 12 weeks. Revaccination
with all
core vaccines is performed at one year of age. Core vaccines
are
given only every 3 years thereafter except for rabies which
is currently
required yearly by Texas law.
We use the AAFP recommended vaccination sites: Rabies - right
hind leg as low as you can find a SQ space (usually just above
the
hock), FeLV (if used) - left hind leg as low as you can go,
FVRCP - at
base of neck offset over the scapula. Record the vaccination
sites in
your medical record and keep a record of which vaccines you
are
using so you can file a report with the manufacturer and USP
(800)
487-7776 if a reaction or sarcoma develops.
Non-CORE VACCINES:
Feline leukemia virus
Testing for FeLV is required prior to vaccination. Vaccination
against
FeLV is performed only for cats "at risk". Vaccine
is given on the last
two pediatric vaccination visits. Revaccination if cat is
still at risk is
performed at 1 year, then every 3 years thereafter if still
at risk.
FELINE VACCINES NOT USED AT T.A.M.U.:
Feline infectious peritonitis vaccine
Feline Bordetella
Feline Chlamydia (Chlamydophila felis)
Microsporum canis vaccine
Giardia vaccine
An FIV vaccine being produced by Fort Dodge is reportedly
to be
released in the late summer of 2002. We do not presently have
sufficient information to recommend the use of this vaccine.
If you
have questions after the release of this product, please call
for our
current recommendation at that time.T.A.M.U.-VMTH

DOGS:
CORE VACCINES:
Canine paramyxovirus (distemper)
Canine adenovirus 2 (infectious canine hepatitis)
Canine parvovirus
Rabies
Core vaccines are given as a pediatric series to puppies >
6 weeks of
Non-CORE VACCINES:
Canine parainfluenza - Although this is not a "core"
vaccine it is
included in most combination products and is therefore given
if a
combination product is used in the pediatric vaccination series
and
q3 year revaccination.
Canine Bordetella - Given if requested by the owner because
dog will
have potential for exposure by grooming, boarding, showing,
etc.
Leptospirosis - Used by request of owner or assessment of
risk if dog
is from a known leptospirosis endemic area.
CANINE VACCINES NOT USED AT T.A.M.U.:
Canine coronavirus
Giardia vaccine
Lyme vaccine
