Summertime flea tips!

Flea season in Austin lasts almost year-round, but summertime is the worst of it. Flea control has truly gotten easier and safer in the last 10 years; now it is no longer necessary to bomb the house, spray the yard, and dip the dog and cat! Using the new oral flea control products make it easy and safe, and if you use them regularly, as directed, and on all the pets in the household, you will have freedom from fleas!

Oral flea medications-(Program, Sentinel)-This is given monthly by mouth, and serves as a flea birth control and inhibits the maturation of the flea, safely working only on the insect. These are by far the best products out there these days for many reasons:

1. Safety-no insecticides to expose the environment, you, your pet, your children to, and side-effects in your pet are extremely rare

2. Efficacy-this stuff works!

3. Cleanliness-it is very easy to administer; no messy liquids/sprays

Topical "spot-on" flea medications -- (Advantage and TopSpot/Frontline) These are very effective products that consist of a small amount of liquid placed in one spot between the shoulder blades that kills adult fleas (98% of them within 24 hours) and repels them for about a month. If you have a flea allergic pet and one flea makes them break out, a "spot-on" product may be best for your pet. Two points to beware of: first, if your pet gets wet during this month, each bath or swimming decreases the efficacy of the product; and secondly, there are a lot of cheaper products out there that are NOT effective and have had many bad reactions occur, especially in cats. You definitely get what you pay for with these products; spend the money to buy them from a reputable pet shop or a veterinary hospital.

Daily flea sprays and dips-not as commonly used these days because of the more effective, safer monthly spot-on products.
